We were speeding down a small road in Bali when this temple spirit caught my eye from its place by the entrance to a small Hindu temple outside of Munduk. We had seen nothing quite like him throughout our travels in Bali. I felt an irresistible and immediate kinship. The temple protectors are typically more ferocious in looks than this character who certainly is chock-full of whimsy. The black and white checkered cloth is a power cloth; the black symbolizes Vishnu and the white Shiva. It is made "hole-y" by burning ashes from incense sticks.
