They talk about patience being a photographer’s best friend. Well this image was 13 years in the making. I had been in the Keanae Arboretum along the serpentine road to Hana on the north coast of Maui in 1974. There I had my first encounter with rainbow eucalyptus tree bark. Its outer deep red bark sheds to reveal the green inner bark which matures going through a cycle of blue, orange, and brown tones before becoming maroon. All the different stages are visible at once. The images I had taken in 1974 were pre-tripod days for me and I wasn’t wild about them. I returned 13 years later and had more satisfying results. This image is the entire width of one trunk.
