This cloudscape was photographed through the window of a commercial airliner as we descended through a thunderstorm for a landing in Miami. Usually airplane windows are very scratched up, but I had the good fortune of having a new airplane, a window seat, and a storm all at once. On other flights I had noticed that when the sun is low in the sky, the polarizing filter that I use seems to interact with the plexiglas to turn the lens into a diffraction grating. As I turned the polarizer, different colors of the spectrum would be picked up from the reflected light off of the particles of moisture in the clouds. Instant water color.
